Run a follow-up mail merge

Reach out again with a different message, based on how recipients reacted to your first campaign.

Run a follow-up

Prerequisites
  • You enabled the tracking report for the first mail merge.
  1. Open your contact list spreadsheet.

    tip

To hold specific recipients back from a follow-up, enter 0 (zero) as their merge status.

  2. Select Extensions > Yet Another Mail Merge: Mail Merge for Gmail > Open tracking report.

Open tracking report selected in the Yet Another Mail Merge add-on menu
  3. Click the + button.

The + button at the top of the tracking report sidebar
  4. Choose your options:

    1. Who do you want to target? — The number next to each option is how many recipients match it.

    2. Where to run the follow-up campaign? — Choose In new sheet if you want to keep your first campaign's tracking stats. YAMM only tracks the latest campaign run on a sheet.

    3. Follow-up on same email threads? — In the same thread, the follow-up arrives under your original email. See About email threads.

Follow-up panel with the target audience, sheet, and thread options selected
  5. Click Follow-up.

  6. Select your email template and click Send emails.

Start Mail Merge window showing the follow-up audience and a Send 3 emails button

Each recipient who matched your audience receives the follow-up. With In same threads, it arrives under your original email:

What changes in your contact list spreadsheet

When you run the follow-up In same sheet:

  • YAMM renames the previous Merge status column to Previous merge - <date> and tracks the follow-up in a new Merge status column.
  • YAMM refreshes the YAMM IDs that link your contact list spreadsheet to the campaign.
  • Recipients who didn't receive the follow-up are filtered out. To display them again, remove the filter on the Merge status column.

About email threads

Follow-ups in same threads work only if the follow-up email has the same subject, the same recipients, and is sent from the same email account.

Some flexibility:

  • Adding Re: and Fwd: at the beginning is not considered a different subject.

  • The follow-up still threads even if you add new addresses in cc.

  • The follow-up still threads even if you send from an alias.

The option is not available if:
